Tennis, table tennis, sailing,
As a tennis player who continually studies the sport, I enjoy helping motivated players get the most from their game, how to steadily improve upon their weaknesses, and how to effectively use their strengths. Inspired as a teen by the book, The Inner Game of Tennis, I pursued the practice of meditation once I moved to Boulder. The affect of meditation on the game of tennis and its mental challenges is profound. I enjoy entering tournaments and playing on a team in league play.
Table tennis has been a part of my life since I was a young boy. While working on my masters degree in New Mexico, I joined a table tennis club that trained Olympic hopefuls. There I learned how to train, and how to impart heavy spin and power into my shots. Since then, I have enjoyed coaching many players, helping to elevate their game to a competitive level.
I have taught hundreds of people how to sail (started teaching as a 17-year-old), sharing with them my deep love for the sport. I enjoy teaching seamanship skills (safety first), rules and tactics for racing, and the finer points of how to get from here to there by the power of the wind.
Here in Colorado, I have an A-Class catamaran that I keep at Union Reservoir, just east of Longmont. I enjoy teaching using it or one of the club's Lasers. I race at Union all season long but also enjoy leisure sailing there because of the wakeless rule. Motorboats are allowed but are limited to slow speeds, so it's mainly a few fishing boats.
As a bareboat captain and co-captain, I have sailed the San Juan Islands in the Pacific Northwest, the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior, the BVI's in the Caribbean, the Croatian Islands in the Adriatic Sea, the Windward Islands in the Caribbean, the fjords of the south coast of Newfoundland, and other trips. My racing resume is extensive, primarily on boats under 20' but also a number of regattas racing from Marblehead, MA to Nova Scotia on a 40' trimaran, long-distance keelboat races on Lake Superior, and multi-hull racing on Martha's Vineyard. I am not yet a licensed captain, but I am fully qualified and available to lead your charter sailing adventure.
I have extensive powerboat experience, as well, numbering in the thousands of hours operating powerboats in the 18' to 24' range, plus sailing vessels up to 60' under motor.
I am a veteran of more than fifty-five wilderness trips in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, all but the first as the trip guide. Roughly a quarter of those trips were wintertime ski trips, nearly all of those ski trips in sub-zero weather. I have also hiked the Wind River Range of Wyoming, Isle Royal on Lake Superior, and the legendary Kekekabic Trail across Northern Minnesota. I actively raced as a swimmer through high school and then in college in Masters Swim programs. I have done many open water swims over two miles in length and competed as a triathlete at the Olympic distance.
